The Hunger Games

Instituted by the Capitol 74 years ago in response to district uprising during the Dark Days, the Hunger Games are a blood sport in which contestants, called Tributes, are imprisoned in a vast outdoor arena to fight to the death over a period of several weeks. The last tribute standing wins, and returns to their district to be showered with prizes (largely consisting of food).

The games are an unsubtle symbol of government control over the lives of district citizens and an open threat regarding future uprising. Regardless, districts are required to treat the Games as a festivity.
